Postmortem
What went right?
The concept was a great start. I wanted to create a SHMUP (shoot-em-up) style game where instead of the player being a space ship and fight in space they were on the water. Pirates were one of the first ideas that popped into mind. Now that I had a theme I was willing to play around with it was time for asset creation. Choosing pixel art over traditional digital work fits the theme better. I still wanted it to feel like a classic SHMUP with my own spin on it. Since most classic SHMUPs, like Galaga and Space Invaders, has up and down movement, this game was created to go left to right with the enemies traveling right to left.
What went wrong?
This game was harder to create than anticipated. First off, like any other games, there were lots of technical and coding problems. Ships did not move the way they were meant to, assets not appearing to the right layers, UI systems not working, and etc... The list could go on. There were days where to code would work fine and there were other days were it would simply refuse to work due to computer lag or something else.
Next Steps?
I would definitely love to further develop this game into to a more polished piece with working audio, transition scenes and dialogue. While I'd like to keep some aspects of a classic SHMUP, I also want to make the game stand out.
