Postmortem
What went right?
...Not much actually. The title and splash screens worked as intended and turned out great. The flow between screens were a little buggy but, other than that small hiccup, those worked beautifully. Also the current sound and visual effect work well. It would be great if there were more but these are a good start.
Since the game is currently pretty short, there isn't much to go off of.
What went wrong?
We spent so much time in the concept phase of the game that we ended up losing time to actually code the game. Even after cutting many of our original ideas, we still were too ambitious. We started with a card collection battle game however, that led to two art pipeline. A 2D one for the cards and a 3D one for the character models. Our indecisiveness over aesthetics cost us lots of time. Perhaps in the future, we should prioritize the game-play over the aesthetics of the game. While both are important, if the game doesn't function or "play", it isn't really a game. Also, we should figured out and focused on what the core mechanics of the game was going to be.
Since we never truly establish roles when we started this project, everyone was sort of doing a little bit of everything. This led to a bit of chaos a LOT of chaos. Communication was NOT our strong suit. This disconnect caused many problems. We didn't set any goals so we could stay on schedule and solidifying decisions took way too long to figure out. After our second or third meeting, we should started programming.
What are our next steps?
In the future, we would love to add more visual effects and sound to the game. What we have now is very bare-bone. We want to take the game to the next level. Also we would like to at more mythological characters into the game as we originally intended to. Maybe a character select system or a card collection system like we intended to add in the beginning. Another thing we would like to work on is to have player vs. player combat to be played on two different devices. Right now the multiplayer aspect can only be played on one device with the current turn based system. Lastly, we will definitely need to add a way to show that a player has won the game, when it is player 2's turn and proper scene transitions.
